Animal, Vegetable, Mineral: Building Stronger Teeth

November 27, 2024

As our orthodontist at Woodhaven Braces leads our patients on a journey toward a healthy, beautiful smile, it’s important to note that while our treatment is in progress, you can do your part by maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. Diet is a major factor in this regard, especially one key aspect: Calcium.

Why calcium? Because this essential mineral is a building block in strengthening the hard outer protective layer of your teeth called the enamel. It’s even more important to bolster the enamel while your teeth are being repositioned by braces or aligners.

Calcium helps repair tooth enamel when it’s been under attack from acids or sugary foods and beverages, which prevents tooth decay. It also boosts your gums, which are essential for supporting your teeth.

Foods that are rich in calcium include green, leafy veggies like spinach, broccoli and kale; tofu, especially a variety that’s been prepared with calcium sulfate; dairy products including milk, cheese and yogurt; and some non-dairy milk alternatives like soy and almond milk.

How much calcium should you have in your diet and from which sources? The answers to these questions are different for every person. According to the National Institutes of Health, calcium is crucial during the growth spurts we experience during childhood and adolescence. As we get older, our bodies are not as efficient when it comes to absorbing calcium, so increasing the amount of this vital mineral may be called for — and not just for our teeth but for our bones, as well.

If you have any questions relating to the role that diet and nourishment play in your oral health during the course of our treatment, our orthodontist at Woodhaven Braces is more than happy to provide answers! After all, the journey toward a healthy beautiful smile requires teamwork! Please contact us today if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
