Confidence is one of an athlete’s most important qualities, and we want you to feel confident that reaching your athletic goals is compatible with protecting your braces or aligners.

Here are some recommendations for playing it safe while playing your favorite sport:

• All athletes, regardless of whether they have braces or not, should wear a properly fitted mouthguard to protect their teeth and jaws during collisions and falls. Our orthodontist can produce a custom-fitted mouthguard that provides both comfort and protection for those wearing braces.

• If you’re playing a contact sport like football, hockey, or lacrosse, a properly fitted helmet is a must. Helmets protect your face and head from injuries that could damage your teeth or orthodontic appliance.
• It’s recommended to remove clear aligners before playing sports, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. You don’t want to damage or lose an aligner during impact. Keep a protective case on hand to store them safely while you’re on the field.
• Communicate with your coaches to let them know you're undergoing orthodontic treatment, which requires you to maintain a safe playing environment. Chances are there’s someone else on the team or on the court who’s also wearing braces or aligners.
• Talk about your athletic pursuits with our orthodontist. We can provide personalized advice on protecting your teeth and braces/aligners during your particular activity, and answer any specific questions you have.
