In the interest of setting the record straight, and in recognition of October’s National Orthodontic Health Month, our orthodontist at Woodhaven Braces is going to dispel some myths for anyone who’s been considering treatment but is holding back because of outdated misconceptions.
Myth: Metal braces are the only treatment we offer to straighten your teeth.
While metal braces remain popular, we offer a variety of treatments that employ state-of-the-art technology and materials. Ceramic braces are clear or tooth-colored, making them far less noticeable than their metal cousins. Clear aligners, which don’t contain metal brackets and wires, have become a popular choice. And there’s even a new option for metal braces: Lingual braces affixed in the back of the teeth, tucked away out of sight.
Myth: Orthodontic treatment is only for kids.
It’s never too late to achieve a healthy, radiant smile! In fact, one in four people receiving orthodontic treatment are adults, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.
Myth: Orthodontics is strictly about appearances.
While the cosmetic benefits we provide are certainly a major result, bringing the teeth and jaws into alignment makes for comfortable chewing and digesting, and greater ease when speaking. The improvements our treatments bestow on your oral health will also have an affect on your overall health.
Myth: Orthodontic treatment can be delivered by internet providers.
Treatments as intricate and individualized as the health and function of your teeth, gums and jaw must be provided and monitored by a qualified orthodontist. Relying on an online provider without the benefit of office visits with a trained orthodontist is unwise and potentially harmful.
