Braces and Stained Teeth Are a Bad Combination

June 28, 2022

You’re wearing braces because you want your teeth to be healthy and complemented by a beautiful smile. And whether they’re metal or clear, braces come with the responsibility of being mindful of foods that can damage their rubber bands, wires and brackets. So, you stay away from foods that are chewy, crunchy, sticky and hard, and you take the extra time and effort required for thorough cleanings. But certain beverages and soft foods can stain and harm the areas of your teeth that the braces don’t occupy.

When you want an orthodontic practice that’s dedicated to keeping your teeth looking and performing their best, look no further than the office of Woodhaven Braces. We offer an extensive menu of services for children and adults who want straight teeth for health and cosmetic reasons.

The surface of teeth, called enamel, is porous, so it can absorb the colors and substances of what gets stuck to and in the hardware. This is especially true during any extended periods when you haven’t had a chance to floss and brush.

Fruits are great for your health, but the vibrantly hued ones can leave stains. Think produce such as cherries, blackberries, pomegranates and blueberries.

Sauces and gravies are tasty, but the dark-hued varieties (such as tomato, soy and curry) can do some damage. If your tongue can soak up the colors in hard candy, ice pops and tinted beverages, your teeth can too.

Though you can’t go without your daily cup of coffee or tea, keep in mind that they can make your teeth dingy. Red wine is an infamous stain-inducer.

Many sodas and sports drinks have bright-colored dyes, and most are loaded with flavor-enhancing chemicals and enamel-weakening acids that set the stage for stains (and cavities!) to settle in. They are not your friends. Non-carbonated water is the best choice ward off discolorations.

At the office of Woodhaven Braces, our high-tech, up-to-the-minute diagnostic equipment will give us an overall view of the health of every aspect of your mouth and teeth while providing the topmost standard of personalized care. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment.
